Austin Long Named Co-Winner of SCIAC's Jesse Clark Award for CMS Men's Golf

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps senior men's golfer Austin Long shared the SCIAC's Jesse Clark Award for the 2019-20 season, the conference office announced this morning.

Long and Jack Moeller of Occidental were the co-winners of the award, which goes to the golfer who best demonstrates the high skill and sportsmanship exemplified by Jesse Clark, and is voted on by members of each SCIAC men's golf team.

Long was a four-year member of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team, earning top-20 finishes at the SCIAC championships in each of his first three seasons. He also competed at the NCAA Championships as both a sophomore and junior, shooting even par three times to help CMS finish in the top-10 both times. He also earned a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar award as a junior last year.

As a senior this season, Long had top-15 finishes in all four events he competed in, including three top-10s, earning a spot on the PING All-West Region team. He had helped the Stags get off to a quick start to the season, earning a top-10 national ranking and a 14-stroke win in the first SCIAC regular season championship.

Jesse Clark was a student-athlete in the CMS men's golf program, serving as a team captain before graduating in 1965. Clark was known for his easy-going personality, competitive spirit, and dedication to being a student-athlete. In April of 1966, he died in action during the Vietnam conflict, and the award was started in his memory by his family, as well as Professor and Mrs. Charles S. Holmes.

The SCIAC announced all of its character awards from the spring 2020 season today, which were voted on despite the cancelation of collegiate athletics in March. To view a complete list of the award winners, go to the following link:
