Edward Wu's 66 Helps CMS Men's Golf Out to 12-Shot Lead after First Round of SCIAC No. 1

BEAUMONT, Calif. - Led by an impressive 66 (-6) from first-year Edward Wu, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team shot 8-under as a team to take a 12-shot lead over Redlands after the opening round of the first SCIAC regular season tournament on Saturday at Tukwet Canyon Championships Course.

The Stags shot a 280 as a team on the opening round, while Redlands was +4 with a 292 after its opening round. 

CMS had three of the top four on the individual leaderboard, as well as four in the top seven and five in the top 10. Wu holds a four-shot lead at the midway point after a spectacular start to his round that saw him birdie seven of the first 13 holes, including three in a row on 11, 12, and 13 to peak at 7-under. 

Junior Ken Kong is in a tie for second with an opening-round 70, placing him four shots behind Wu, along with Kyle Sharp of Redlands. Kong actually started dlow with bogeys on his first two holes, but then picked it up and had five birdies over his final 10 holes, including one on 18 to finish with a 70. 

Sophomore Rishi Bhat stands in a tie for fourth at 1-under after a 71 on Saturday, while senior Austin Long is tied for seventh at +1 and first-year Vikram Chatterjee is tied for 10th after shooting a 75. 

The second round of SCIAC #1 will get underway tomorrow morning as the Stags will look to build on an impressive opening day.
