CMS Men's Golf Wins Embry-Riddle Invite, Brenner Rallies from Six Down for Individual Title

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - After trailing by four strokes the first of three rounds, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team roared past the competition to capture first place at the Embry Riddle Co-Ed Invitational by 17 strokes on Tuesday afternoon at Antelope Hills Golf Course, led by a first-place finish from senior Harrison Brenner.

CMS shot a +4 on the final round after shooting even par on both rounds on Monday to end up with a final score of 856 (284-284-288) well ahead of second-place Arizona Christian at +21 with an 873. It was the second straight dominant win for the Stags, which won the Redlands Invitational by 21 strokes at 17-under par.

Brenner, meanwhile, came from six shots down to win individual medalist honors with a final round of 70 (-1) on Tuesday, giving him a three-round 209 (71-68-70). He was still trailing coming into the final six holes, but picked up birdies on No. 13, No. 16 and No. 17 to rally back and win the tournament by a single shot over Bill Rosenthal of Arizona Christian, who shot 67 and 66 in his two rounds on Monday, but had a 77 on Tuesday as Brenner was able to catch him from behind. 

Also shooting in the red in the final round on Tuesday was first-year Edward Wu, who was consistent the whole way through the tournament, shooting an even-par 71 in both rounds on Monday and then coming in with a 70 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for third at -1 for 54 holes. Wu took the turn on Tuesday at even par, and then came through with eight pars and a birdie on 17 to finish the tournament under par. 

First-year Will Parker contributed his second straight strong round with a 72 to help CMS to the team win. Parker had three straight birdies on the front nine on holes No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, and then added a birdie on 17 to move up to 11th place after starting the day in 22nd.

Senior Austin Long also had a top-10 finish in eighth place with a three-round 218, including a 70 in his first round on Monday.  

The Embry-Riddle Invitational Championship concludes the fall season for the Stags, who will resume their schedule in February as they look to contend for the 2020 national championship. The program won its first national title in 2016, and has almost everybody back after earning an eighth-place finish a year ago.
