RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team had a strong opening day yesterday, shooting -6 over 36 holes to take a big lead at the Bulldog Invitational. The Stags were even better on Sunday.

CMS shot 11-under par as a team over Sunday's final round at the S Club, winning the tournament by 21 strokes over host Redlands with a three-round 847 (284-286-277) in its first event of the 2019-20 season. All six Stags competing (which did not even include reigning SCIAC Champion and league player of the year Mason Chiu, who did play this weekend) finished in the top 13 out of 42 competitors as well, with five of the six shooting in the red over the three rounds.

All six Stags shot under par on Sunday's final round. Senior Austin Long had the top day, coming in with a spectacular round of 67 to move up seven spots into a tie for fourth place with a -4 for the tournament. Also in the tie for fourth was senior Harrison Brenner, who finished off a consistent (70-72-70) weekend with his second two-under out of three rounds.

One shot behind Long and Brenner in a tie for seventh place were junior Ken Kong and first-year Edward Wu, both of whom shot two-under 70 on Sunday. First-year Vikram Chatterjee had a three-under 69 on Sunday to cap off a three-day tournament with a two-under 214. First-year Adrian Chiu had a 71 on Sunday, finishing his first collegiate tournament at +1 with a 217.

Long did not have a single bogey on his way to a 67 on Sunday. He opened his round with a birdie on the third hole in the shotgun start format, and closed it with his fifth birdie on the second hole. Wu also had a bogey-free round, earning his birdies on the 7th and 18th holes. Kong had three birdies and just one bogey over his 18 holes, while Chatterjee had five birdies and 12 pars in an almost blemish-free round as well.

Brenner stood at even par through 15 holes, and then picked up back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to come in at -2, his fifth and sixth birdies of the round and his 15th and 16th birdies over the three-day tournament to lead the Stags. Chatterjee had 11 birdies and two eagles, Wu had 11 birdies, and Long had an eagle to go with his eight birdies.

CMS will be back in action in two weeks when it travels to Arizona for the Embry-Riddle Co-Ed Invitational on Oct. 7-8.
