CMS Men's Golf Places Second Nationally in GolfStat Computer Rankings

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team ranks second in the nation in the first NCAA Division III GolfStat computer rankings, it was released on Tuesday, while sophomore Ken Kong ranks No. 1 in the individual rankings.

The Stags are behind only Emory in the top 25 rankings, with the Eagles having an adjusted scoring average of 71.11 and CMS close behind at 71.80. Illinois Wesleyan places third, followed by Huntingdon, Wittenberg, Texas-Tyler, Southwestern, Guilford, Washington & Lee and Methodist rounding out the top 10. 

Redlands was the second-best SCIAC team in the rankings, placing at No. 12, while Chapman was in the No. 18 spot. 

CMS had an impressive fall season in its three events, winning the Cal State Intercollegiate in Ventura by 14 strokes over Texas-Tyler, shooting 13-under as a team, behind two 68s from Austin Long. The Stags then shot a +1 as a team to win a dual match with Chapman, as Kong shot a 66, including birdies on his final five holes in a row.

CMS then closed out the fall with a close second-place finish at the Embry-Riddle Invitational, shooting a +7 as a team, seven shots behind Ottawa University. The Stags had three of the top four finishers, as Alex Yun shot a -2, and Alex Wrenn and Rishi Bhat each shot a -1, with Wrenn carding a 64 in the second of three rounds. 

Six CMS players are also currently in the top 100 individual rankings. Kong places No. 1 in the nation currently after shooting a -4 at the two-day Cal State Intercollegiate and a -6 in the dual with Chapman. Meanwhile, Yun currently stands at No. 6, Wrenn No. 21, Long No. 33, Bhat No. 62 and Mason Chiu rounds out the CMS top six in at No. 82. 

The Stags, who were ranked No. 6 in the nation in the preseason coaches poll, will be back in action next semester, when they compete at the CSU San Bernardino Coyote Classic on Feb. 17-19 before hosting the first SCIAC regular season championship on Feb. 23-24.
