CMS Men's Golf Shoots 11-Under on First Day of Cal State Intercollegiate

VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team shot 11-under par as a team in its first round of the 2018-19 season on the opening day of the Cal State Intercollegiate Tournament at Olivas Golf Course.

The Stags hold an 11-shot lead after the first round of the two-round teams, well ahead of a cluster of teams in a close battle for second. Master's College currently holds the No. 2 spot on the leaderboard with an even-par 288, while Texas-Tyler, Marymount, George Fox and tournament host Cal Lutheran are all one shot behind in a tie for third at 289.

CMS had three golfers shoot in the 60s for their first rounds of the year, led by junior Austin Long and sophomore Ken Kong, who each carded 68s by shooting four-under par, one shot off the individual lead. One shot behind was freshman Alex Yun with a 69, while sophomore Mason Chiu was the fourth scorer for the Stags with an even-par 72. Freshman Rishi Bhat ended fifth on the team with a 75 in his first collegiate round.

The second round of the two-day tournament will take place tomorrow morning as CMS, which was ranked sixth nationally in the GolfWeek preseason poll, will try to win a team title in its 2018-19 debut. The Stags will then have a dual with Chapman on Sept. 28 at Los Serranos, before concluding their fall schedule at the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Prescott, Ariz. on Oct. 7-9.
