Stags Rally Late, Make Cut at National Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team rallied late in the Second Round of the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championships to make the cut by four strokes. The Stags got through 15 holes before the Tournament was delayed by rain for the second-straight day. CMS used the breather to compose themselves before finishing the round in dramatic fashion with four birdies across the team in their final three holes to ensure themselves two more rounds at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

Playing the West Course on Wednesday, CMS dropped seven strokes off their score from Monday with a 10-over, 298 to climb the leaderboard after the Second Round. After two rounds, CMS sits in 17th place at 27-over par with 603 total strokes. Matt Shuman (CMC) led the Stags on the day with four birdies en route to a two-under, 70. All four of Shuman's birdies came on his final eight holes after starting the day on the 11th hole.

Shuman's best run in the round came on a four-hole stretch on holes three to six. During the stretch, Shuman made three birdies and a par to go from one-over to two under.

Like Shuman, Alex Wrenn (CMC) finished strong down the stretching, carding a one-under, 35 on his final nine holes of the day. Wrenn had shot a two-over, 38 with seven pars and two bogies on his first nine holes to finish the day with a one-over, 73.

Jonathan Shaw (CMC) also put together a solid second round on Wednesday. The senior, started his day on the 10th hole and shot two-over on the courses back nine – his front nine of the day – before coming home with an even-par 36 on his final nine holes of the day. A double bogey on the par-four, seventh was his only blemish of his final nine holes, but he leveled it out with birdies on the third and eighth holes. Shaw shot a two-over, 74 on the day and is tied for 32nd overall in the Tournament.

Austin Long (CMC) and Johnny Brandt (CMC) rounded out the Stags' scoring on Wednesday with rounds of 81 (+9) and 82 (+10), respectively. Back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes highlighted the Second Round for Long.

The Stags will begin the Third Round of the National Championships with tee times beginning at 7:35 a.m. ET/4:35 a.m. PT. CMS will be playing alongside Hunting College (+25 overall) and Rhodes College (+31) during the Third Round on Thursday.
