No. 8 Men's Golf Wraps-Up West Cup in Sixth

LA VERNE, Calif. – The No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team wrapped-up the West Cup on Tuesday with a team score of 304 (+20) at Sierra La Verne Country Club. The Stags finished the weekend in sixth place with a team-score of 925 (+73) after the three rounds. Playing on an extremely narrow course with severely slopped greens, the Stags scored north of 300 in all three rounds. No. 9 Guilford College won the tournament with a score of 891 (+39), finishing eight-strokes clear of second-place La Verne (899, +47).

On the tight track, Jonathan Shaw (CMC) and Matt Shuman (CMC) had it going for the Stags with rounds of 71 (E) and 73 (+2) on Tuesday to finish in the top-20 in the tournament. Shaw finished the tournament with a score of 227 (+14) to place in a tie for 13th, while Shuman was just a stroke behind at 228 (+15) in a tie for 16th-place.

Day Two Update – Stags finish sixth of 17 (309-312-304—925, +73)

Jonathan Shaw turned in the best round of the day for the Stags, shooting an even-par, 71 on the 6,403-yard course. Shaw made four birdies and an eagle to lead the Stags on the afternoon. At one point, Shaw was four-under par for the day, but finished with a pair of bogies and a double to finish at even par. Across the three rounds, Shaw tied for 13th in the 83-player field at 14-over.

After two bogies in his first five holes, Matt Shuman shot even-par across his final 13 holes en route to a two-over, 73 on the day. Shuman birdied the first hole of the back nine with a two on the par-three, 202-yard, 10th hole. For the tournament, Shuman shot 15-over and finished in a tie for 16th.

Austin Long (CMC) finished the West Cup with a seven-over, 78 on Tuesday. He birdied his first hole and shot a one-over, 37 on the front before carding a six-over, 41 on the back. Long finished the weekend in a tie for 31st at 21-over.

Alex Wrenn (CMC) and Johnny Brandt (CMC) each went over 80 in Tuesday's round. Wrenn carded an 82 (+11) on Tuesday and finished the tournament in a tie for 40th at 23-over across the three rounds while Brandt shot 86 (+15) in the Third Round and tied for 79th at 42-over.

The Stags will be back in action on April 7-8 when they take on the SCIAC at Los Serranos Country Club in the second leg of the SCIAC Championship.

Day One Update – Stags tied for fifth of 17 (309-312—621, +53)

The Stags opened the West Cup on Monday with a pair of rounds at the Sierra La Verne Golf Club. The Stags carded rounds of 309 and 312 to sit in a tie for fifth-place after Day One of the tournament. After two rounds, Alex Wrenn (CMC) is 12-over for the tournament and leads the Stags with 154 strokes. Matt Shuman (CMC) is just one shot behind Wrenn at 155 (+13).

Guilford College leads the 17-team field with a score of 600 (+32) after two rounds. The Stags' SCIAC foes, No. 33 La Verne (602, +34) and No. 21 Cal Lutheran (604, +36) currently sit in second and third. No. 32 Trinity (TX) is alone in fourth at 52-over and No. 28 Pacific Lutheran is tied with the Stags at 53-over (621).

As mentioned, Wrenn and Shuman led the Stags' effort on Monday and both currently sit in the top 21. Shuman shot a four-over, 74 in the morning to tie for 11th in the individual standings heading into the afternoon. In the first round, Shuman made three bogies and a double, but birdied the par-four, 11th to card the low round of the day for CMS. In his second round of the day, Shuman shot a nine-over, 80 making nine pars and nine bogies.

Alex Wrenn was a bit more consistent en route to his 154 after two rounds. He shot back-to-back rounds of six-over, 77. On the day, Wrenn made three birdies with two in the opening round and one in the second round.

Jonathan Shaw (CMC) and Austin Long (CMC) were just a shot behind Shuman after Monday's rounds. The duo are tied at 156 (+14) with three other players for 30th place. Long birdied his first hole of the day on his way to shooting a six-over, 77 in the first round. Long then carded an eight-over, 79 in the afternoon session. Shaw made a birdie in each round on Monday and put rounds of 80 (+9) and 76 (+5) on the card.

Like Long, Johnny Brandt (CMC) birdied his first hole of the day, but two rounds in the 80s puts Brandt in 75th place heading into Tuesday's round. Brandt is 27-over par after rounds of 86 (+15) and 83 (+12).

Heading to the final round on Tuesday, the Stags will look to cut into the 21-stroke lead that Guilford holds. CMS will tee off in the final round on Tuesday beginning at 7:08 a.m.
