Long Goes Low, Stags 10th After Two Rounds

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team is wrapping up their fall season this week with a trip to the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate. The Invitational opened on Monday with two rounds. The Stags shot an opening round 295 (+7) before dropping 10 strokes and carding a 285 (-3) in the afternoon session to sit alone in tenth place heading to the final round tomorrow. Texas A&M - Commerce leads the tournament with a team score of 559 (-17) after two rounds.

Playing the 7,139-yard, par-72 Golf Club at Estrella, Austin Long (CMC) anchored the Stags' effort with a six-under, 66 in his second round for the third lowest round of the day. Long shot a 73 in the first round and sits in seventh place heading to the final round (139, -5).

After the first round on Monday morning the Stags sat in 14th-place following a seven-over 295. Competing as an individual, Harry Brenner (CMC), led CMS in the first round with an even-par 72. Opening his round on the fourth hole, Brenner put two birdies on the card and eagled the par-five, 557-yard eighth-hole for the highlight of his round.

In the middle of his second round, Brenner played a 12-hole stretch at one-under with 11-pars and a birdie on the par-four 10th. Three front-nine bogies gave Brenner a two-over, 74 on the round. Through two rounds the sophomore is tied for 34th at 146 (+2).

Mason Chiu (CMC) and Long were right behind Brenner with identical rounds of 73 (+1) in the morning. Chiu started his day off on fire. The freshman began his tournament with a birdie on the par-five 14th hole. Two holes later, Chui carded his second birdie in the first three holes to move to two-under. After giving a stroke back on the 17th, Chiu put two more red numbers on the card on the second and fifth holes to move to three under. Despite fading slightly down the stretch, Chiu finished his round just one-stroke over par (73) and tied for 40th.

Chiu's second round got off to a slow start. He played his first four holes at six-over, but settled down with a birdie on his sixth hole of the round. Chiu shot a nine-over, 81 in the second round and is tied for 79th heading into the final round.

Following a one-over, 73 in his first round, Long went low in his second round of the day to vault his way up the leaderboard from a tie for 40th to a tie for seventh. The sophomore scattered six birdies amongst 12 pars on his card for a bogey-free round of 66 (-6). Long played the par-fives at -3 in the round and, through two rounds, has recorded five birdies on par-fives in the tournament. As mentioned, Long sits in a three-way tie at 139 (-5), just five strokes off the lead heading to the final round.

Long was one of just six players in the 104-player field to drop seven or more strokes from round one to round two. He also fired the lowest second-round in the tournament.

Jonathan Shaw (CMC) was the Stags' most consistent golfer on the day scoring rounds of 74 (+2) and 73 (+1). Shaw a bit of an up-and-down round in the morning. The senior put three bogies and a double on the card, but countered with an eagle on the par-five eighth and a birdie on the 15th to finish at two over (74).

In his second round, Shaw birdied the 15th-hole for the second time on the day. Two bogies and 15 pars later, Shaw finished his round with a one-over, 73 and sits in a tie for 42nd at 147 (+3).

Josh Hunter (HMC) shot a three-over, 75 in the opening round on Monday. The freshman pared his first six holes of the tournament before a bogey on his sixth hole. Hunter then pared the next four holes, but a tough, four-hole stretch resulted in three bogies. A birdie on the par-four 11th (Hunter's 17th hole) brought him to three-over where he would finish the round at 75.

In his second round, Hunter put three birdies and three bogies on the card to fire a round of even-par, 72. The 72 pushed him up the leaderboard 25 spots where he will sit tied for 42nd at 147 (+3) entering the final round tomorrow.

Matt Shuman (CMC) carded a 78 in his first round of the day. The senior put 12 pars on the card against six bogies to finish the first round with a 78 in a tie for 71st at plus-six. Shuman dropped four strokes off his round one total with a 74 in his second-round that included a birdie on the par-five eighth.

The third, and final round, will tee off on Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the Golf Club at Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz. Live scoring will be available for the final round at this link.
