Three Red Numbers Push Stags Past La Verne

CHINO HILLS, Calif. - On Friday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team edged the La Verne Leopards 279-282 in a dual at Los Serranos Country Club. Jonathan Shaw (CMC), Austin Long (CMC), and Alex Wrenn (CMC) all went under-par with rounds of 67, 68, and 71, respectively, to fuel a nine-under team score of 279. Shaw's five-under, 67, was the low round of the afternoon and gave the senior his second tournament victory of the season.

Joining Shaw in the 60s was Austin Long. After an even-par 36 on the front-nine, Long went for a four-under 32 on the back to finish with a 68 on the afternoon.

Alex Wrenn got around the 6,698-yard course in a one-under, 71 to round out the red numbers for CMS. Shaw, Long, and Wrenn turned in three of the lowest five rounds on the afternoon.

For La Verne, Pitiluk Phanomchai (68, -4) and Hisham Hussein (70, -2) led the Leopards' effort, but it was not enough to take down the Stags.

Johnny Brandt (CMC) rounded out the scoring for CMS by carding a one-over, 73. Matt Shuman (CMC) turned in an even-par 72 to finish with the fifth-lowest score for CMS.

The Stags will now travel to the Western New Mexico Invitational for a 54-hole tournament starting on Monday at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Az.
