Shaw Tops Leaderboard, Stags Finish Fifth in First Tourney

VENTURA, Calif. – Jonathan Shaw (CMC) followed up a Day One, 67 (-5) by carding a 66 (-6) on Tuesday to finish atop the leaderboard at the California State Intercollegiate with a two-day total of 133 (-11), four shots clear of the field. As a team, the Stags opened the 2017-18 season by finishing the tournament in fifth-place with a team total of 578 (+2). Ottowa University (AZ) took the team total, nine shots ahead of the Stags with a total of 569 (-7).

Monday - First Round - 288 (E)

The Stags started the season by firing an even-par, 288 on the par-72 course. Jonathan Shaw and Ken Kong (CMC) led the Stags by posting a pair of red numbers with Shaw shooting a 67 (-5) and Kong posting a 71 (-1) in his first collegiate round. Shaw leads the tournament with a one-stroke lead over Quinn Edwards (Ottowa), who shot a four-under 68.

As a team, the Stags sit in third-place after Chapman (285, -3) and Cal Lutheran (286, -2) both went under par to open the tournament. After their round of par, CMS slots three shots off the lead and two strokes ahead of Ottowa (AZ) and Arizona Christian who both fired rounds of 290 (+2) on Monday. George Fox (291, +3) and Marymount (CA) (293, +5) are also within eight strokes of the lead.

 Individually Shaw and Kong were two of 10 players to shoot under-par on the afternoon. As mentioned, Shaw sits atop the leaderboard alone with a one-stroke lead. Four players are within three strokes of the lead before a bottleneck at one-under has five players tied for sixth.

Alex Wrenn (CMC) and Mason Chiu (CMC) fired rounds of 75 (+3) to tie for 38th-place after Day One.

Just one stroke behind Wrenn and Chiu was Johnny Brandt (CMC). Brandt heads into Day Two tied for 45th-place at four over, 76.

Tuesday - Second Round - 290 (+2)

On Day Two of the tournament the Stags shot a 290 (+2) to finish fifth in the team standings. CMS finished just nine shots of the pace in a very competitive opening tournament. Ottowa paced the field finishing with a team score of 569 and featured three golfers in the top-10. Overall, the four teams ahead of the Stags (578, +2) all finished under-par. SCIAC foes, Chapman (570, -6) and California Lutheran (572, -4) finished in second and third while Arizona Christian (574, -2) finished just ahead of CMS in fourth.

For the second day in a row, Jonathan Shaw paced the field by firing the lowest round of the day. Shaw edged his Monday score (67, -5) by a stroke, shooting a 66 (-6) to win individual medalist honors by four strokes over Arizona Christian's Nick Norton (137, -7).

Alex Wrenn carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 147 (+3) to tie for 29th in the tournament. Freshman Mason Chiu duplicated his 75 from Monday for a tournament total of 150 (+6) and a tie for 42nd in the 59-player field.

On Tuesday, Ken Kong got around the 6,772-yard course in 80 strokes for a two-day total of 151 (+7) to tie for 48th in his first collegiate tournament.

Johnny Brandt finished with a 77 (+5). Combined with his 76 (+4) on Monday, Brandt posted a 153 (+9) to sit alone in 55th for the tournament.

The Stags will next hit the links on Sept. 29, when they square off with La Verne in a duel at Los Serranos Country Club.
