Brenner helps Stags to team-low 298 in final round
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Flor. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team concluded their run through the NCAA Championship tied for 12th place as the Stags played their lowest-scoring round on the final day with a 298. Wittenberg University won the national title after finishing two strokes ahead of Guilford College at +28 strokes, shooting below 300 in all four days.
The Stags played their round in reverse, starting on the 10th hole back nine and finishing their game on the ninth hole.
Freshman Harrison Brenner (CMC) led the team with a +1 on the fourth day, had a promising start, stroking two birdies on the 11th and 16th hole, but a double bogey on the 17th cancelled it out. Brenner stayed steady in spite of the bogey on the first and fourth hole, and finished strong with a birdie on the ninth to finish his round.
Last year's individual runner-up, sophomore Alex Wrenn (CMC), demonstrated some excellent-shooting on the course. His day got off to a promising start, shooting -1 on the back nine, including three birdies. He putted his fourth birdie on the first hole, and finished his day with a +2 after dealing with some trouble on the third hole. Wrenn ended the tournament tied for sixth in total birdies, converting 12 across the four days.
Like Brenner, junior Matt Shuman (CMC) started his day with two birdies in the front nine before dealing with a double-bogey on the 16th hole. The junior remained steady in the front nine in spite of the bogey on the first, eighth, and ninth hole and finished his final round with a +3. Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) opened his round with two bogeys, but cancelled them out with a birdie on the 14th and 16th hole to finish even on the back nine. Shaw went on to finish his round with a +4. His classmate Johnny Brandt (CMC) had two birdies on the back nine, but a tough showing on the third hole and a few bogeys resulted in a +10 finish.
Head coach Bim Jollymour and the Stags conclude the season on a high note, having won the SCIAC and making the final cut of the NCAA Championship this season without a senior on the roster in spite of the expectation set precedent from last season.
