CMS concludes third round with 303
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team finished the third round of the 2017 NCAA Championships with a 303, climbing up one spot to be tied at 12th place on the leaderboard on Thursday afternoon. The team currently sits +50 and is 27 strokes behind leader Wittenberg University, but only five strokes away from a top-10 spot.
Junior Matt Shuman (CMC) shot his best round of the tournament, putting a birdie on the fourth hole and finishing the front nine with a -1. Shuman had two more birdies on the back nine, but a tough performance on the 13th hole and two bogeys to close the round put him at +2.
Freshman Harrison Brenner (CMC) had a decent run through the front nine with seven pars and two bogeys and managed to land a birdie in the 10th hole. After hitting some trouble from the 13th to 15th hole, Brenner saw his fortune change with a birdie on the 16th and concluded his round at +4. Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) also finished 4-over, hitting +1 on the back nine with a birdie on the eighth and 13th holes.
Sophomore Alex Wrenn (CMC) shot 5-over on the round, going +1 in the front nine with a birdie on the fifth hole. The sophomore hit a snag on the 10th and 16th hole, but was even on the rest. He is currently +10 overall at the tournament, sitting tied for 32nd place on the individual leaderboard.
After nearly all the Stags struggled with the much-maligned seventh hole yesterday, junior Johnny Brandt (CMC) triumphed as the only member on the team to score a birdie on that hole. He later shot a birdie on the 16th hole and finished his round at +7.
CMS will pair with Illinois Wesleyan (T9m +45) and Washington & Lee (11, +48) in the final round of the tournament, with the first group of golfers teeing off at 6:39 a.m. PST. The group will begin their round from the 10th hole.
