Stags make cut and sit in 13th at NCAAs

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team made the 18-team cut at the 2017 NCAA Championships with a 310 on Wednesday's round on the El Campeon course. CMS now sits in 13th place at +35 after the first two days of the tournament.

With the early tee time, the Stags finished their rounds just as many teams were getting started for the day. This made it difficult to forecast how the rest of the field would fair during the day and how many teams would drop below CMS in the standings. As the day wore on and the golfers struggled with some wind, the Stags improved from 22nd all the way back up to 13th. After two days, they are 27 strokes out of the lead but just 10 out of the top-5.

The first day on the El Capmeon course was a difficult one for the Stags. The course is 6844 yards that plays at a par 72, divided into par 35 on the front nine and 37 on the back. All five Stags struggled with consistency on the front nine, but then gained composure later in the round.

Matt Shuman (CMC) and Alex Wrenn (CMC) birdied holes No. 1 and 2 respectively and then Johnny Brandt (CMC) and Shuman went low on the par four No. 6. The seventh hole gave all but Harrison Brenner (CMC) trouble as he parred it to stay at 3-over thus far.

The back nine had three par fives and the Stags had success across the board on the first two, making up some strokes from the front nine. Brenner, Wrenn, and Jonathan Shaw (CMC) birdied No. 10 and then Wren and Shaw ended up at just plus-1 on the back. Shuman and Shaw led CMS at 5-over par on the day with 77s and Wrenn sits in 19th individually at 5-over.

Huntingdon stays atop the leaderboard at 8-over for both days, led by Addison Lambeth at 3-under so far. Also from the SCIAC, Connor Rooney from Pomona-Pitzer narrowly made the individuals cut due to earning a spot after a four-hole playoff.

Tomorrow, CMS pairs with Williams (14th, +37) and St. Johns MN (t15th, +38) as the whole field now competes on the El Campeon course for the rest of the tournament.
