Defending national champs look to repeat as SCIAC Champions

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 13 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team enters the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference as the No. 2 seed, just eight strokes behind No. 22 University of La Verne. The tournament will be held on the South Course at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. The Stags last played there in a one-day tournament against La Verne in the fall. This year's SCIAC Championships span April 23-25 with the Stags teeing off at 11 a.m. on Sunday and Monday, 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

As the defending SCIAC and national champions, the Stags have had success when the pressure is on. This weekend, they will play on a par 72, 6992 yard course for the SCIAC Championships. CMS will need an excellent performance this weekend to earn its 12th SCIAC title.

In the first SCIAC tournament this spring, CMS demonstrated its depth in a comeback win by shooting a 286 on the final day. Junior Johnny Brandt (CMC) boasted a 70 on the second day to improve 17 spots on the leaderboard and finish in fifth. Classmate Matt Shuman (CMC) led the charge at 1-under on the weekend for third place overall. But the Stags' freshmen made the difference in the win. Austin Long (CMC) and Harrison Brenner (CMC) each improved three strokes to give CMS the tournament victory.

The Stags faced stiff SCIAC competition in the second conference tournament as ULV took an early 29-stroke lead over CMS on the first day. The Stags bounced back with a 4-over 292 on the second day as junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) led with a 70. Also making a splash was the 2016 national runner-up, sophomore Alex Wrenn (CMC) with an even par.

Spectator information can be found on the tournament host webpage. Regular admission is $10, seniors and military are $5 and students/faculty/staff with SCIAC ID and kids under 12 are free.
