Dramatic comeback for Stags in SCIAC #2

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After posting a 317 on Saturday, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team came back with a 292 on the second day to finish in a tie for fourth overall. Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) led the Stags at 5-over on the weekend, aided by a 2-under (70) on Sunday.

The second conference competition was held at Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside, Calif. The course played at 6600 yards and par 72.

All eight SCIAC teams battled wind on the first day, but La Verne came out in the lead with an even par 288. The Stags sat 29 strokes out of the lead, but with their best performance yet to come. On Sunday, CMS posted the lowest round of the day at 292 and improved three places in the team standings to tie with Cal Lutheran for fourth place overall. More importantly, the Stags closed the gap temporarily created by the first round to trail the Leos by just eight strokes heading into the SCIAC Championships in two weeks.

One highlight on the weekend was sophomore Alex Wrenn's (CMC) tee shot on No. 15. The par four was shortened by 59 yards between the rounds down to 287 and Wrenn's first swing came within inches of an ace. The easy tap-in gave the sophomore and eagle.

Shaw wrapped up the weekend in a tie for eighth individually as one of only three players under par on Sunday. This is just his second tournament back on the course with the Stags this spring after having been sidelined with a back injury.

Also finishing up in the top-20 were Wrenn at 7-over and junior Johnny Brandt (CMC) at 9-over.

"I'm extremely proud of how the guys came out on Sunday and battled back," said head coach Bim Jollymour.

Next up for CMS is the highly anticipated SCIAC Championships on April 23-25. The overall winner of the regular season plus the championships earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
