Stags post low round on final day of West Cup
LA VERNE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team improved each round for an eventual second place finish at the West Cup tournament at the Sierra La Verne Country Club. The Stags posted the lowed team score in the final round of the 54-hole tournament at 7-over (291) today. Individually, junior Matt Shuman (CMC) shot 2-under on the final day for a tie of fourth place, just four strokes back from the leader.
The field consisted of 80 players that combined for 16 teams.
CMS was in seventh after putting together a 308 in the first round. Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) led the Stags with a 4-over (75) closely followed by Shuman at 76. Shaw tallied two birdies while Shuman steadied the team with 14 pars. Freshman Harrison Brenner's (CMC) round was up and down as he eagled hole No. 13 but ended up with an 80 overall.
Redlands, Trinity, Wittenberg, La Verne's B squad, Chapman, and St. Thomas all sat above CMS on the leaderboard after the first 18 holes. By the end of the first day on the course, the Stags had climbed up to fifth, leap frogging over St. Thomas and Chapman while La Verne's A Team put up a 290 in the round, boosting them past CMS up to second place.
In that second round, junior Johnny Brandt (CMC) grabbed the reins and finished with a 73 on the day that included 14 pars and two birdies. Shaw remained steady with another 75 while freshman Austin Long (CMC) brought down his first round score by one to post a 76 in the second. CMS' 300 was the third lowest for the middle 18 holes of the tournament.
After a good night sleep, the Stags shaved off nine strokes as a team wrapped up the tournament in second place. Shuman was under par with a 69 on the day and worked his way from 10th to fourth during the round and was the highest individual finisher for CMS. He had more birdies than pars in the round and was 3-under on the back nine. Brandt was good for a 72 with another eagle for CMS, this time on the 14th hole. Shaw's round included eight pars and a birdie on the front nine and an eventual 74. The four Stags that contributed to the team score on Tuesday were individually all in the top-20 (out of 80) in the tournament.
Next up for CMS is the second SCIAC tournament of the season April 8-9 at the Oak Quarry Golf Club.
