Freshmen support Stags’ win over La Verne

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team finished up its fall season with a friendly against La Verne at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. The one-day tournament was played on the South Course, adjusted to be a par 72 at 6992 yards. CMS totaled 289, beating La Verne's 294.

The low round on the day was by ULV's Austin Matzaganian at 67, winning the individual crown by four strokes. All four of the Stags' scoring rounds came in lower or even with the next finisher for the Leopards.

Sophomores Alex Wrenn (CMC) and Sidney Cozier (HMC) each came home with 71s. Cozier tallied the most birdies on the team with five – three on the front nine and a pair on the back. Both Cozier and Wrenn were under par on the back nine, each with just one bogey. Wrenn birdied three holes in a row, reminiscent of how he finished the final round in the National Championship.

Also scoring for CMS were the teams' two freshmen Harrison Brenner (CMC) and Austin Long (CMC). Brenner was 1-over at 73 and matched his partner, Cozier's birdie on the 476-yard par four at No. 13. Long was successful on both par fives that were converted to par fours: No. 8 and No. 16. All told, Long had 12 pars which was good for the most pars on the course.

Juniors Joe LaHorgue (CMC) and Johnny Brandt (CMC) each posted 78 for the day. La Horge put up 39 on each of the front and the back while Brandt improved two strokes from a 40 to a 38.

Head coach Bim Jollymour felt it was a successful fall season and is anxious to compete again, even though the next tournament is in February.
