Stags still out front; lead cut to nine in second round at NCAA Championships

PENFIELD, N.Y. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team remains at the top of the leaderboard after two full rounds in the 2016 NCAA Championships in New York. The No. 3 ranked Stags played on the tougher of the two courses – Midvale – today and the scores showed it, in comparison to yesterday's 2-over round on the Mendon course. CMS finished at +11 on the day and +13 overall, still good for the top spot and nine strokes ahead of the second place finisher of Washington & Lee at +22.

Senior Kethan Reddy (CMC) shot 3-over on the day and is still the No. 1 individual in the field. Reddy is one stroke ahead of Logan Lanier from LaGrange, who has been playing partners with teammate Alex Wrenn (CMC) for the last two rounds, and Evan Cox from Virginia Wesleyan. After shooting 4-over and dropping a number of spots on the leaderboard on the front nine, he tallied three birdies on the back nine to finish at 3-over in the second round and even par over both days.

Wrenn and Jonathan Shaw (CMC) are now tied for ninth place at three over par. To get there, Shaw jumped up nine places and seven golfers leap frogged over Wrenn. Shaw was 3-under after his third birdie on the 13th hole but then bogeyed the four of the last five holes to end up 1-over on the day. Wrenn played an even-keeled round with 14 pars and four bogeys.

Johnny Brandt (CMC) improved on his score from the first round to shoot 75 today with three birdies including one on the first hole. Matt Shuman (CMC) had a tougher time with the Midvale course but still managed an 81 in the second round. His eagle on the 17th hole was the first for the Stags in the tournament.

The final two rounds of the championships will be played on the Midvale course with just the top 15 teams and the top five individuals with teams not represented. Illinois Wesleyan and Emory were tied for 15th place and Illinois Wesleyan won in the 17th hole playoff for the final team spot for the last two days of the championships.

Day 2 Results

The Stags tee off tomorrow, May 12, starting at 9:30 a.m. EDT. They will be paired up with Washington & Lee and St. Thomas (Minn.) for the third round.
