Highest finish ever for Stags at Collegiate Invite against D-III’s best

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – A month off in between competition did not phase the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team as it had its best showing ever – fourth place – at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational March 18-20. In what has become an annual trip for CMS to compete against Division III's top teams before nationals, CMS finished the three rounds at even par (864) on the par-72 courses, five shots behind LaGrange College (859) who won the Invitational and just one shot behind second place Methodist and Rhodes who tied for second place. Overall there were 30 teams in the competition.

As a team, the Stags had the third-lowest average score on par 3 holes (3.15: 9-over par) and third-lowest average on par 4 holes (4.07: 11-over par). After the second round of the tournament, CMS led the field. In the second round, the team's score of 8-under par 280 is the best round a CMS team has had in Bim Jollymour's 15 years as CMS head coach.

Freshman Alex Wrenn (CMC) had the highest finish for the Stags as he tied for third place (212) at 4-under par. Two of Wrenn's three rounds were under par (second round - 69 and third round - 71) and he had an even par-72 in the first round. He excelled on par 3 holes going 2-under par, the second lowest score on par 3s in the tournament.

Sophomore Jonathan Shaw (CMC) tied for 20th (216). He also had two rounds under par and had rounds of 68, 70 and 78. Shaw's first round, 4-under par 68 was the low round of the weekend for the Stags. Sophomore Matt Shuman (CMC) tied for 42nd (220) while sophomore Johnny Brandt (CMC) tied for 47th (221) and senior Kethan Reddy (CMC) tied for 70th (224) in the 149-man field. Shuman had a second round 69 and Brandt had a par-72 in the second round to mark the other Stag rounds below or at par.

CMS next competes in the West Cup, March 27-29 at Sierra La Verne Country Club.
