Consistent golf leads to second place finish at East/West Invite

LIVERMORE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team earned second place in the East/West Bay Area Invitational, a predominantly NCAA Division II event played at the difficult Wente Golf Course. The Stags scored consistently well on each of the three rounds for scores of 308, 303 and 306 to combine for 917.

Different Stags posted the low score during each round. Sophomore Jonathan Shaw (CMC) put up an even-par 72 in the first round that was good for a tie of third place as an individual. Only two athletes in the field were under par on the first round, both from Western Washington. As a team, WWU broke 300 with a score of 296 take first place.

The second round was also played on Monday and sophomore Johnny Brandt (CMC) shot low with a 70, the only golfer to be under par in the round. Brandt improved from 21st place up to a tie of third, just behind Shaw who was the individual leader after the first day. Western Washington held onto the top seed with CMS and St. Martin's University tied for second just five strokes behind.

In the third round, WWU posted a 312 as a team, dropping them below CMS who delivered with a solid 306. Sophomore Joe LaHorgue (CMC) came through for the Stags with a 74, besting his score on the previous round by 10 strokes.

Over the three rounds, the most consistent golf was played by sophomore Matt Shuman (CMC), posting scores of 75, 77, and 76. Three CMS golfers finished in the top-10 in the field of 56: Shaw at fourth, Brandt tied for eighth and Shuman tied for 10th.

On the final day, St. Martin's charged into the lead, ultimately beating the Stags by seven strokes. CMS eked out a one-stroke advantage over both Sonoma State and Western Washington who tied for third.

Senior Kethan Reddy (CMC) rounded out the Stags' team scorer finishing in 35th place, tied with freshman Will Richardson (CMC), who competed as an individual.

The team next competes at the annual Collegiate Invitational at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia, Mar. 17-20.
