Brandt wins first collegiate tournament, Stags finish in second at Embry-Riddle

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – With a first place individual finish, sophomore Johnny Brandt (CMC) helped the fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team to a second place finish at the Embry-Riddle Invitational on Sept. 27-28 at Talking Rock Golf Club.

For Brandt, it is the first tournament win of his collegiate career. At 7-under par (209), Brandt finished five shots ahead of the next closest competitor, Dean Harpe of Arizona Christian.

As a team, the Stags finished at 9-over par (873) for the three rounds on the par-72 course, one shot behind tournament winner Arizona Christian University.

In its final tournament of the fall season, CMS led Arizona Christian by six strokes after two rounds of play on the first day. The Stags posted a 293 in the first round and 2-under par 286 in the second round. The third round was where Arizona Christian made up the difference, shooting a 287 to CMS' third round of 294.

Biola University (881), host Embry-Riddle (885) and Marymount College (907) were the other teams in the top-5 in the 7-team field.

All told, the Stags had three golfers in the top-10 out of the field of 42 golfers. In addition to Brandt being in the top-10, freshman Alex Wrenn (CMC) closed out the tournament in eighth (4-over par, 220) and sophomore Jonathan Shaw (CMC) finished in a tie for ninth (5-over par, 221).

Brandt's second round, 6-under 66 was the lowest round for any golfer during the tournament. He did not have a single round over par (72, 66, 71). Shaw joined Brandt as the only two Stags with rounds under par. Shaw posted an opening round score of 71.

Sophomore Joe LaHorgue (CMC) finished in a tie for 17th (10-over par, 226) and sophomore Matt Shuman (CMC) ended his tournament in 33rd (20-over par, 236).

The Embry-Riddle Invite closed out the fall season for CMS. The next tournament for the Stags is on Feb. 6-7 at the SCIAC #1 Tournament at Redlands Country Club.
