Stags finish second at SCIAC Championships

BEAUMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team finished in second place at the SCIAC Golf Championships which were held at the par-72 Oak Valley Golf Course on April 26-28. Kethan Reddy (CMC) placed third overall in the individual standings to lead CMS. As a team, CMS had a three round score of 883, just one stroke behind La Verne who came in first with a score of 882. Even with their impressive final round finish in the conference's final tournament of the season, the Stags finished third overall in SCIAC for the entire season, behind second place La Verne and first place Redlands.

In the first round of play on April 26, CMS shot a 7-over, 295. Their 7-over par put them two strokes behind Redlands (293) and one stroke behind La Verne (294) after the first day. The Stags were led by Reddy, who shot an impressive 2-under par for the second lowest score of the first round. The second lowest score for the Stags in the first round was shot by Jonathan Shaw (CMC) who shot just 2-over par for the day.

On the second day of the tournament CMS shot their best round with a score of 290 which put them into second place behind La Verne. Reddy, Matt Shuman (CMC) and Johnny Brandt (CMC) were all at even par for the second round to lead CMS.

On the third and final day of the SCIAC Championships, the Stags found themselves trailing La Verne by five strokes. The wind in Beaumont picked up on the final day, which affected every team's score, as most teams had their highest marks of the tournament. The Stags closed the lead on La Verne by shooting a 298, which tied Cal Lutheran for the lowest combined team round of the day. Despite this strong performance, the Stags still fell one stroke short of tying La Verne in the tournament. Jackson Zepf (CMC) and Shaw led CMS in the third round with scores of 1-over par and 2-over par, respectively.

Reddy led CMS shooting a 216 for all three days giving him the third best score in the tournament.  Shuman shot a 225 which placed him inside the top-10 at 8th place and Shaw and Zeph rounded out the tournament top-10 both shooting a 226 making them tied for 10th place.

The Stags finished the season in third overall with a composite score of 2,086 over seven rounds of SCIAC tournament play. The Stags composite score puts them just two overall strokes behind La Verne (2,084) and 21 strokes behind Redlands (2,065).

CMS is now waiting to hear if they will get a berth in the NCAA National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina on May 12-15.
