Freshmen five lead Stags into SCIAC Golf Championships
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Over the last several years, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team has featured a lineup full of upperclassmen heading into the SCIAC Championships. This season however, CMS has gone through a bit of a youth movement.
If CMS is going to win the conference championship for a second-straight year, the team is going to be carried there in large part because of its freshmen class, which is the top-ranked freshmen group in NCAA Division III according to Golfstat, with a stroke average of 75.66.
Those freshmen will be on display at the SCIAC Golf Championships which run from April 26-28 at Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif., as CMS' team slated to participate features five freshmen and one junior.
The five freshmen expected to participate for CMS at SCIACs are Jonathan Shaw (CMC), Matt Shuman (CMC), Tim de Silva (CMC), Johnny Brandt (CMC) and Jackson Zepf (CMC).
"They are complete players and have really strong games as freshmen," said head coach Bim Jollymour. "I can't say that they are better in one area or another. It's a well-rounded group. We have been playing three or four all season, so I am confident in them."
Lone upperclassmen, junior Kethan Reddy (CMC), rounds out CMS' top-6. Of the seven tournaments CMS has played dating back to the fall, Reddy led CMS in four of them. The other three were led by freshmen; Shaw (Collegiate Invite and SCIAC #2) and Shuman (West Cup). Shaw and Shuman have been CMS' low scorers in its last three tournaments.
Currently, CMS sits in third in the SCIAC standings heading into the weekend, but the conference championship is up for grabs. With three rounds to go before the conference champion is decided, the standings are incredibly close between the top four teams. Through four rounds of play and two SCIAC Tournaments, Redlands has averaged a 293, while La Verne is in second (300.50), CMS is in third (300.75) and Cal Lu is in fourth (301.75).
Tee times for the first day of the SCIAC Championships (April 26) are set for 12 p.m. with a shotgun start.
Whittier College is hosting the tournament at Oak Valley.
