Newcomers lead the way as Stags finish in third at closely contested West Cup
BEAUMONT, Calif. – An 11-stroke deficit after the first round proved to be too much for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team to overcome as CMS finished in third at the three-round West Cup Invitational, March 23-24 on the Tukwet Canyon Champions Course.
In the 15-team event, CMS sat in third after the first round with a team score of 304 at 16-over par, 11 strokes behind La Verne. The Stags improved in the second (297) and third (295) rounds and finished with a three-round, 32-over par score of 896, just four strokes behind first-place Redlands (892) who overtook La Verne (895) on the second day to win the event. Cal Lutheran (898) and Southwestern (904) rounded out the top-5. Of the teams that finished in the top-5, four are in the top-25 nationally, including the Stags who are currently ranked 11th in Division III.
In four spring tournaments so far, the top finisher for the Stags has varied three times. Junior Kethan Reddy (CMC) led CMS in its first two spring events and freshman Jonathan Shaw posted the low score for the Stags at the Collegiate Invite. Most recently at the West Cup Invitational, freshman Matt Shuman had the team's lowest score. He finished in a tie for 5th place overall with a three-round, 5-over par score of 221. Shuman's second round score of a 2-under, 70, is his lowest round of the spring.
Redlands' Bobby Holden and La Verne's Alex Spencer tied for first overall at 2-under par.
Shaw also finished in the top-10 for CMS, tied for 9th with an 8-over, 224. He posted rounds of 75, 76 and 73. Senior Ben Ho (CMC) tied for 12th (225) while Reddy (229) tied for 18th, freshman Joe LaHorgue (CMC) tied for 30th (234) and freshman Tim de Silva (CMC) tied for 32nd (235). Ho's final round score of 70 tied Shuman for the low CMS round and third-lowest round of the tournament.
