Top-5 finish for Stags at Collegiate Invite is best since 2012

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team finished in fifth place at the annual Collegiate Invitational March 13-15, held on the par-72 Pine Lakes and Oleander courses at the Jekyll Island Golf Club. The fifth place finish was the team's highest since 2012 when CMS tied for sixth. The Stags finished in 9th at Jekyll last season and 10th the year before that.

As a team, CMS put together a three-round score of 886 with rounds of 289, 306 and 291. CMS finished five shots out of the top-3. LaGrange (863) came from behind after the first round to win the event. Illinois Wesleyan (873) finished in second, Methodist University (881) finished in third and Oglethorpe (884) finished in fourth. CMS' 1-over par score of 289 on the first day put CMS in a tie for first place with Huntingdon College, just ahead of LaGrange. LaGrange then led after the second round en route to the win.

The Stags performed best on par 5 holes during the tournament with the fourth-best average score (4.88, -7) in the field. On par 3 holes, CMS had the second-best average score (3.17, +10) while they had an average score of 4.27 on par 4's. The Stags had 172 pars over their three rounds which ranked fourth to go along with 30 birdies and one eagle.

Individually, freshman Jonathan Shaw (CMC) paced the Stags with a 3-over score of 219 (71, 77, 71) and finished in a tie for 15th place out of 150 participants. LaGrange's Cory Howard and Methodist's Mason Stutler tied for first place with 9-under scores of 207.

Senior Ben Ho (CMC) ended up two shots back of Shaw with a 221 (75, 73, 73) which tied for 19th. Junior Kethan Reddy (CMC) finished in a tie for 27th with a 222 (71, 78, 73) while freshmen Joe LaHorgue (CMC) shot a 227 (tie for 63rd) and Matt Shuman scored a 235 (tie for 106th). Reddy's low round was a 1-under, 71 while LaHorgue's low round was a 72 and Shuman had a low round of 76. The rounds of 71 by the CMS golfers were the sixth lowest individual rounds in the field.

CMS is back in action on March 22-23 at the West Cup Invitational in Beaumont at Tukwet Canyon Golf Course.
