Stags finish fifth in competitive Cougar Invite

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first tournament of the spring season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team had an excellent fifth place showing at the CSU San Marcos Cougar Invite. As the current No. 1 ranked program in NCAA Division III, the Stags were the highest finisher in SCIAC and NCAA at the event and primarily faced tough competition in high ranking NAIA programs.

Only 22 shots over three rounds by five golfers per team differentiated the winning team (NAIA No. 5 Johnson & Wales – FL) from CMS. The other top finishers were all NAIA teams: No. 7 CSU San Marcos, No. 10 Texas Wesleyan, and No. 11 Concordia University (OR).

The CMS team was comprised of a senior, a junior and three freshmen: Ben Ho, Kethan Reddy, Matt Shuman, Jonathan Shaw and Tim de Silva. A sixth CMS golfer, freshman Jackson Zepf, also participated as an individual and placed 46th in the field of 88.

Reddy led the team with the one round at par and another two strokes under for a combined 222 and sixth place overall. Shuman and Ho both finished in the top 20 golfers and shot in the 70s every round. Shaw and de Silva rounded out the Stags' team and finished in the top 50 golfers in the event.

The Stags next play in the first SCIAC tournament on Feb. 21-22 at Robinson Ranch.
