Trip to NCAA Men’s Golf Championships ends early for Stags

GREENSBORO, N.C. – An attempt for a third-straight top-10 finish for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships came up short on May 14, as CMS missed the cut after two rounds at the 2014 NCAA Championships. The Stags finished the second round at the Grandover Resort's par-72 East Course in 20th place, six strokes from the cut line which was the top 15 teams at the end of the second round.

Over the two rounds, CMS had a score of 605 (300 and 305) which was 29-over par. Through the beginning and middle part of the second round, the Stags looked as if they would make the cut, hovering around the top-10, but then fell off later in the day.

Defending national champion Bradley Shigezawa had the lowest two-round score for the Stags at a 4-over 148 which put him in a tie for 41st after the second round. Since the Stags did not make the cut as a team, Shigezawa will not have the opportunity to continue play and defend his title. Shigezawa had an opening round score of 76 and then shot even par in the second round.

Two shots behind Shigezawa was another senior in Jordan Stein who tied for 61st with a score of 150. Stein also had his best performance in the second round with a 1-over 73. Sophomore Justin Beck (151) had the lowest one-round score of the Championships for the Stags in the first round with a 2-under par 70. He finished in a tie for 70th, while sophomore Kethan Reddy (156) and junior Ben Ho (163) rounded out the field for the Stags.
