Angle's Career-High 36 Points Leads CMS Men's Basketball to 103-72 Rout of Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Josh Angle scored a career-high 36 points, his fourth 30-point game of the season, and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team shot 58.1 percent as a team as it rolled to a 103-72 win over Redlands on Saturday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

With the win, CMS improves to 12-2 on the season, including 6-1 in the SCIAC, maintaining its share of first place in the league standings. Redlands slips to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in league play with the loss.

Angle shot 13-20 from the floor and 5-9 from three-point territory on his way to 36 points, which passed his previous best of 30 set three times this season, including opening day against Puget Sound. CMS also had a strong all-around effort from Matt Meredith, who finished with 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists, while Max McCalla had career highs of 13 points and six assists, while knocking down all three of his three-point shots.

As a team, CMS had 25 assists and only 12 turnovers as they handled Redlands' pressure defense with ease, shooting 58.1 percent from the floor (36-62) and 54.2 percent from three (13-24). The Stags also had 63 points in the second half on 71 percent shooting (22-31) as they ran away with it after halftime.

In fact, CMS didn't start pulling away until the very end of the first half, as it used a 13-3 run to turn a 27-27 tie into a 40-30 lead at the break. McCalla started the run with a three-pointer, then fed Meredith for a three to make it a 33-27 game. After Redlands answered with a three, Angle hit two foul shots, Sam Johnson hit a short jumper, and Kiran Kruse nailed a three-pointer to stretch the lead to 10 at the break.

CMS then put the hammer down with the first eight points of the second half to build the lead to 48-30, capping a 21-3 run spanning both halves. Angle made the first two shots after halftime, Meredith made a layup and TJ Askew hit two foul shots to cap the 8-0 start to the second, and the Bulldogs were unable to threaten the rest of the way.

The Stags return to action on Wednesday night, when they host Caltech for a 7 p.m. contest.
