JD Levine Scores Career-High 18 Points, CMS Men's Basketball Coasts to 88-69 Win Over Westmont

CLAREMONT, Calif. - JD Levine scored a career-high 18 points off the bench and the CMS Men's basketball team won its third consecutive game, led by four Stags scoring in double-figures. Nicolas Segura Dobjanschi paced the field with 19 points to clinch a victory over Westmont College 88-69.

The CMS Men's basketball team improves to 6-3 with the victory, while the Westmont Warriors drops to 6-4. Segura Dobjanschi scored 19 points on 8-12 shooting to lead the way. Jeremy Horn tallied 18 points on 9-15 shooting and collected his third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds (7 offensive, 7 defensive). Horn has had his playing time skyrocket in junior season, going from just over six minutes a game in each of his first two seasons with the team, to 23.6 minutes a game, and his production has met that growth in time as well, averaging a career-high 14.0 points per game.

Levine shot 6-11 from the field and 4-5 from the free-throw line to record a career-high 18 points and score in double-digits for the first time this season. Levine played 22 minutes, his most this season, and made all of those count for his best shooting performance at 54.5% from the field. He doubled up his output in total through his first eight games played this season, where he registered nine points total. 

Miles President shot 4-for-11 from the field 2-4 from three-point land and finished with 10 points. It marks President's second consecutive double-digit performance, after scoring 11 against Miramar on Wednesday, December 12. 

The Stags grabbed control early and went into the halftime break with a 48-33 lead. Horn had 10 points at the break to lead all scorers, while Segura Dobjanschi had eight points (4-7), President and Chukwueloka Oti had seven points apiece, and Levine had nine points at the half buzzer. 

In the first half, the Stags shot 51.3% (20-39) from the field, 4-7 from three-point land, and 4-5 from the free-throw line. CMS forced 13 first-half turnovers from Westmont and committed just three turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Stags held off the Warriors in the second half, outscoring their opponent 40-36, a complete performance was highlighted by 11 (4-5) second-half points from Segura Dobjanschi. The second-half shooting percentage dipped to 42.9 (15-35) but it proved to be enough to sail to a 19-point victory, 88-69. 

The bench played a key roll once again for the Stags, outscoring the Warriors 36-23 with George Walker recording four points on 2-6 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds, Maxwell Kirsch hitting his only three-point try to finish with three points, and Ryan Kusch pitching in with two points over seven minutes. The Stags out-rebounded the Warriors 42 to 28 and shot a total of 74 shots compared to 43. 

CMS made 9-14 free-throw attempts and 9-19 from three-point land with only nine turnovers for the game. The Stags forced 16 turnovers and scored 20 points off of those giveaways. 

Westmont's sophomore guard, Kyle Scalmanini, son of CMS Men's basketball team head coach Ken Scalmanini, faced a team coached by his father for the first time and scored 13 points (3-9) sinking 6-6 free-throws. The Warriors were led offensively by Olisa Nwachie who scored 19 points on 5-7 shooting and 9-12 from the free-throw line. Westmont finished 19-43 from the field as a team (44.2%), shot just 20.0% (3-15) from three-point land, and made 28-35 (80.0%) from the free-throw stripe. 

CMS Men's Basketball will take a break from the action for upcoming finals week and be back in action on December 31 against Pacific Lutheran at Roberts Pavilion at 4 p.m.
