For the ninth time since the new millennium and for the seventh time in the past nine years, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags men’s basketball team captured the Dave Jacobs Memorial Trophy signifying the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championship.

After the completion of winter sports, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sits at 16th nationally in the Division III Learfield Directors' Cup, as released on March 30. All four winter teams placed in the top-25 in NCAA postseason competition. CMS is additionally the highest ranked program from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Stags take early lead but ultimately fall to undefeated Whitman

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps matched up against the only team in collegiate men’s basketball with an undefeated record in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Stags (23-5) gave it all they had but ultimately fell 79-73 to Whitman (29-0) on Saturday night.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s basketball team needed to play great team basketball to advance in the NCAA Tournament, and they did. The Stags (23-4) beat Whitworth University (23-5) in the First Round 78-73 in a back and forth affair.

For the first time in Claremont-Mudd-Scripps history, both the Stags and Athenas won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament on their home court. The Stags came away with the 77-71 victory over Cal Lutheran on Saturday night in Roberts Pavilion for the program’s fifth tournament championship, earning the automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament next weekend.

In what potentially could have ended in a heart-breaker, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s basketball team (21-4) refused to end its season with a SCIAC semifinal loss to cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer (14-11). After trailing by 18 points during the first half, the Stags grind their way to a comeback to defeat the Sagehens 70-64.
