Stags come up short in Sixth Street Rivalry game

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first Sixth Street Rivalry game of the year for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team, the Stags came out on the low end of the 53-43 battle on Monday night in the Rains Center.

The first half was low scoring and characterized by equally low shooting percentages for both teams. Stags scored in their first possession on a jumper by senior Jason Harrington (CMC). The Sagehens offered a rebuttal and pulled ahead with a three by Gibson Farone-Collins to push the score to 7-4.

CMS struggled to regain the lead due to a handful of early fouls. Nick Lund (CMC) hit a jumper for two more points and then CMS forced a quick turnover to keep possession.

Pomona pulled ahead 13-7 with a layup by Chris Wright. Nicolas Segura (CMC) quickly answered with two points from the only shot he took in the half.

With under two minutes remaining, junior Riley Hall (CMC) drained a three-pointer quickly followed by jumper from Harrington to bring Stags within two points going into the half. Harrington led the Stags with four points in the low-scoring half, 16-14.

Early in the second half, Shelby Lane (CMC) made a contested lay up to bring the Stags within one at 22-21.

The Sagehens' shooting beyond the arc caught on fire mid-way through the second half with a pair of buckets by sophomore Hunter Lowry. PP shot almost 60% from behind the three-point line in the second half.

Hall scored his second basket on the night on a deft give-and-go from sophomore center Kendrick Morris (CMC), giving the Stags some needed fuel. CMS scored on back-to-back possessions with baskets by freshman Evan Davis (CMC) and then a driving layup from Hall. Then, Jack Earley (CMC) was fouled taking a shot and made the free throws, bringing the game within eight points at 42-34.

Davis hit another three, assisted by Lane, just under the four-minute mark before CMS and Pomona-Pitzer traded three-pointers in the final two minutes of play on shots by Farone-Collins and Harrington.

As the clock wound down and the Stags trailed by five points, they were forced to resort fouling in order to regain possession. Unfortunately, CMS was not able to sink any of the last second three-point attempts and ultimately came up short 53-43.

The Stags (6-9, 1-6 SCIAC) next travel to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday to face the Kingsmen and then return home on Saturday for a double-header against Caltech.
