Stags not able to hold on late

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A late lead was not enough for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team who fell to the Occidental Tigers 67-62 in overtime in their second SCIAC game of the year.

The teams traded leads throughout the game, and CMS earned its first advantage midway through the first half on a jumper from senior center Shelby Lane (CMC).

Sophomore forward Nicolas Segura (CMC) played well in the first half for the Stags, as he posted a 2-5 mark from the field and connected on all six free throw attempts. Segura secured a jumper late in the period to take back the lead and help CMS enter halftime up by one.

The trend continued in the second when CMS fought back from a seven point deficit and eventually took a lead of their own on a pair of Michael Scarlett (CMC) free throws at the seven minute mark. Scoring was spread more evenly amongst the starters in the second, but Scarlett led all Stags with seven points in the half.

Lane put CMS up 56-52 with just over a minute to play, but Occidental stayed focused and eventually knotted the game up at 56 with five seconds left on a jumper from Andrew Garrison.

The back and forth second half paved the way for an overtime showdown. Andrew Johnson put the Tigers up by two early in the overtime period and Occidental would go on to lead the rest of the way, eventually edging out the 67-62 win.

CMS got double-digit point performances from Segura, Scarlett and sophomore guard Joey Malgesini, but junior guard Jay Miller and junior forward Andrew Johnson stole the show for the Tigers. Both played over 40 minutes and put up a combined 47 points.

The Stags continue SCIAC play at Whittier on Jan. 9 as they are still looking for their first conference win of the year.
