Scarlett puts up 32 in 91-73 victory vs. Hunter

New York, N.Y. – Sophomore Michael Scarlett (CMC) was a scoring machine in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team's second win on its New York City trip. The Stags bested Hunter College 91-73 on Saturday night as Scarlett scored 32 points in the game.

CMS made 19 buckets in the first half, eight of which were three pointers.

The teams traded baskets in the first four minutes before the Stags put together a 12 point run. Sophomore Joey Malgesini (CMC) got things going with a jumper to up the score to 11-9 for CMS. Malgesini racked up 13 points in the game, marking the fourth game already this season that he has scored in double digits. Then, Scarlett threw down back-to-back threes before a couple of layups had the Stags leading 21-9.

After a missed layup halfway through the first period, senior Shelby Lane (CMC) snagged the offensive rebound and slammed down a dunk, firing up the crowd mostly comprised of CMC alumni. At one point in the half, Scarlett scored 10 points in a row for the Stags and was 5-for-6 including free throws during that stretch.

Despite a few miss-timed passes resulting in turnovers at the end of the half giving Hunter six unanswered points, the Stags owned the 49-33 advantage after 20 minutes.

Scarlett started the second half with a similarly hot hand, making the Stags' first basket of the half and sixth three pointer on the night.

Scoring-wise, the second half was more even with Hunter putting up 40 points to counter CMS' 42. Though, each time the Hawks would go on a run, Scarlett seemed to make another three or layup to dash their hopes of getting within 15 points.

In the whole game, CMS shot 56.3% from the field and 56% from behind the arc, both of which were season highs. Senior Jack Earley (CMC) joined Scarlett and Malgesini with double-digit points with 13. Lane led all players with 12 rebounds and was a free throw short of his fourth double-double in five games.

The Hawks' three point shooter led the team as well. Brian Kruger hit four-threes and totaled 24 points on the night in 29 minutes of play.

CMS (3-2) next plays in the Wells Classic this coming weekend. The Stags face Bristol College (0-5) at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27 and Carleton College (2-0) at 7 p.m. the next day. All men's games for the tournament will be played at the Rains Center at Pomona-Pitzer.
