Gaffaney, Lane and Scalmanini earn All-SCIAC honors

PASADENA, Calif. – Ken Scalmanini, Tyler Gaffaney and Shelby Lane earned awards from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) for men's basketball, announced on Mar. 5. Gaffaney earns his second consecutive SCIAC Athlete of the Year award and Lane joins with a Second Team honor. CMS' head coach Scalmanini is named SCIAC Coach of the Year.

Gaffaney is honored with the Athlete of the Year award after leading the conference in scoring (22.7 points per game) the entire year. Offensively, Gaffaney has the highest shooting percentage (56.4%) and three point shooting percentage (49%) in the SCIAC. He also is second in free throw percentage (84.2%) and second in assists (3.8 per game). Playing a SCIAC-leading 36.4 minutes per game, Gaffaney also records 6.4 rebounds per game (7th). His single game high was scoring 35 points after going 9-for-9 in three pointers on Feb. 24, setting an NCAA record for the 2014-15 season.

Lane earns his first All-SCIAC award after recording 197 rebounds during the season, good for second in SCIAC. He shot 54.1% from the field while averaging 9.3 points per game. Lane recorded two double-doubles during the season and was fourth in SCIAC for blocks with 26. Lane and Gaffaney played a big role in the success of the Stags' defense. CMS is second in the nation for scoring defense, only allowing 55.7 points per game.

Coach Scalmanini is honored with SCIAC Coach of the Year recognition. Scalmanini's contagious enthusiasm and vast knowledge of the game has led the Stags' to unprecedented success. The program has finished first or second in the SCIAC league 13 times, highlighted by eight SCIAC Championships from 2002 to 2015. CMS has now been in the SCIAC Tournament finals seven times and in 2015 became the first team in the eight year history of the SCIAC Postseason Men's Basketball Tournament to win the finals on the road. Scalmanini's winning percentage places him among the top 50 of current DIII coaches.

The Stags were co-champions in the regular season and then won the SCIAC Tournament, advancing them to the NCAA Touranment. CMS faces Texas Lutheran at 5 p.m. CST. (3 p.m. PST) on Friday, Mar. 6. Check the men's basketball schedule for more information.
