CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team showcased its tight defense in the 66-39 win against SCIAC opponent, La Verne. The Stags limited the Leopards to just 14 baskets on the night and 31% shooting.
CMS bested the Leos in almost every category during the game. The Stags out-stole ULV (11-0), out-rebounded (37-31), and had fewer turnovers (15-8). La Verne was only slightly more efficient in their three-point shooting at 42% to CMS' 38%.
Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) played all but three minutes of the game to record 30 points, the second highest scoring night of this season (behind 35 points against West Coast Baptist on Dec. 13). Gaffaney also had a game-high of seven rebounds.
In the second half, senior Jack Grodahl (CMC) found himself open a handful of times and drained a pair of threes including one that ignited the second half scoring. Junior Shelby Lane (CMC) was effective in the paint this evening and put up eight points.
CMS (11-3, 4-1 SCIAC) remains in the top of the SCIAC standings, second only to Chapman who is still undefeated. The Stags next face Cal Lutheran on the road on Jan. 20.
