Stags fall to Pointers in battle of top-25 teams

#20 UW-Stevens Point beat #23 CMS 71-65 on Wednesday afternoon.  The Pointers improved to 9-3 while the Stags fell to 7-2.

After leading in the first few minutes, the Stags fell behind by eight at halftime 33-25.  They were able to cut the lead to two midway through the second half before the Pointers pushed their lead to 11 at 64-53 with 1:27 remaining.  CMS staged a furious rally and cut the lead back to two after going on an 12-3 run in just over a minute.  Stevens Points closed out the win with four free throws in the final 15 seconds.

Tyler Gaffaney led CMS with 26 points and four assists.  Shelby Lane added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Joe Ritchay and Stephen Pelkofer led the Pointers with 23 and 19 points respectively as they combined to shoot 16-25 from the field.

CMS plays again on Saturday, January 3 as they open up SCIAC play.  They will play Redlands at 7:00 at Rains Center.
