Stingy CMS 'D' currently ranks at top of D-III; Stags break into D3hoops.com Top-25

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Through the first month of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team's defense has been the stingiest at the NCAA Division III level, allowing just 50.8 points per game through six games.

The Stags' defense earned the distinction of "Best Defenses in D3 Men's Basketball" in a recent story by BennettRank which featured five teams including CMS from across Division III in its article. The information in the story is based on results from the first month of the season.

Through six games, CMS has held its opponents to 35.7 percent shooting from the field and 27 percent shooting from the three-point line. Twice CMS has held its opponents to less than 40 points and CMS has limited opponents to less than 60 points on three other occasions.

Also released this week, CMS has jumped into the D3hoops.com Top-25 rankings at No. 24. It is the first time for the Stags in the top-25 since CMS ended the 2011-12 season ranked 19th after a 24-4 season. CMS won the conference championship in 2011-12 and then nearly upset defending national champion St. Thomas in the first round of the NCAA Championships.

CMS' next game is on Dec. 13 at West Coast Baptist.
