Second half boost for Stags’ win vs. Grove City

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd- Scripps men's basketball team capped off their 2014 David Wells Classic with a second win, this time beating Grove City 71-55. After a tight first half, the Stags pulled away in the second half, putting up 43 points, to secure the win.

In the first half, CMS only led by two points at 28-26. Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) played the entire half and accrued 14 points. He went on to put up 20 in the game.

In the second half, the closest the game reached was a tie at 40 points before the Stags went on a 10-2 run. Freshman Michael Scarlett (CMC) contributed five of the ten. As the game started wrapping up, senior Jack Grodahl (CMC) and Jack Earley (CMC) hit three pointers to keep the late rally alive.

Scarlett and sophomore Riley Hall (CMC) each added seven points, higher than their career average.

Despite it being close at the half, the CMS defense made continuous stops and ultimately got it to the offense who pulled away for a 71-55 victory.

CMS increases their record to 5-1 and next plays West Coach Baptist on Dec. 13 at 7 pm.
