Comeback falls short for CMS in season-opening loss to Ohio Northern

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – In its 2014-15 season-opener, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team lost 71-67 to Ohio Northern on Nov. 15 at the All-Engineers Classic hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

After falling behind 7-0 in the first five minutes of the game, CMS clawed back and took its first lead of the game at 11-10 after a pair of free throws by freshman forward Jack Ely (CMC) at the 11:46 mark of the first half. The teams traded baskets for much of the remainder of the half, but Ohio Northern went into the break with a four-point lead at 30-26 after a big three-pointer by Konnor Baker with five seconds on the clock.

Ohio Northern pushed its lead to as many as 16 points over the first five minutes of the second half with an 18-6 run. CMS made things interesting however with a run of its own and eventually got as close as two points on two occasions in the final 30 seconds of the game. A layup by guard Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) narrowed the score to 69-67 with 17 seconds remaining. Ohio Northern then closed out the win with a pair of free throws.

Gaffaney had a team-high 21 points while sophomore guard Scott Lynds (CMC) added 10 points off the bench in 16 minutes of play. Ohio Northern was led by Isaiah Roux who had 22 points.
CMS closes out the All-Engineers Classic on Sunday, Nov. 16 with a game against Illinois Tech at 11 a.m. PST.
