Ben Cooney Captures Second SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Honor of 2022

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Ben Cooney of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team earned the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award for games through Saturday, Oct. 9, the league office announced today.

Cooney factored in two fourth-quarter turnovers as the CMS football team held a Chapman team averaging 37 points a game to only six in a 28-6 victory. With CMS leading 14-6, Cooney forced a big fumble on the second play of the fourth that the Stags recovered on the Chapman one-yard line, setting up a one-play, one-yard drive that resulted in a 21-6 lead. He also had an interception at the opposite one-yard line to kill another Chapman fourth-quarter drive.

Four of his six tackles were solo, including one for a loss, and he added a pass break-up to go with his interception. Earlier this season, Cooney earned the award after a 12-7 defeat to Whitworth, when he helped the Stags nearly come away with a big road win.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it returns to Zinda Field to host Cal Lutheran for a 1 p.m. contest.
