Benjamin Cooney Earns Spot on D3football.com National Team of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sophomore cornerback Benjamin Cooney earned one of 22 spots on the D3football.com National Team of the Week for games through Sept. 8, the website announced this morning.

Cooney earned his way onto the national team of the week for his stellar performance in a 21-17 defeat at Puget Sound in the 2019 season opener. His afternoon included an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, running his pick back 27 yards to tie the score at 7-7 and pick up his first collegiate score.

His day didn't end there, though, as he also ended up with six pass break-ups on the afternoon, accounting for over half of the Stags' total of 11 on the day. In addition, he had seven tackles (all solo) one shy of the team lead in that department.

Cooney worked his way into the starting line-up as a first-year last fall and was chosen to the All-SCIAC second team while helping CMS to a SCIAC title, the program's first since 1987. The Stags also made their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.

Cooney and the Stags will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Northwestern (Minn.) for a 10 a.m. contest (PDT) before hosting their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Pacific Lutheran.
