Alessandro Maiuolo Named to D3football.com National Team of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Freshman kicker Alessandro Maiuolo was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week for his role in a 16-9 win over Chapman on Saturday, the website announced this morning.

Maiuolo accounted for 10 of the 16 CMS points on the afternoon, outscoring Chapman all by himself. He was perfect on the day, connecting 3-for-3 on field goal attempts and adding an extra point on the only touchdown of the day for the Stags.

In the first quarter, Maiuolo connected on his two longest field goals of the year, knocking his first one through the uprights from 42 yards and then following up with a 35-yarder to give CMS a 6-0 lead. He added his third field goal in the second half, a 24-yarder in the third quarter, to extend the Stag lead to a two-touchdown margin at 16-2.

The win allowed CMS to clinch at least a share of its first SCIAC title since the 1987 season, while also securing the first NCAA Division III playoff bid in the program's history.

Maiuolo becomes the third CMS player to earn a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week this season. Last week, junior running back Garrett Cheadle earned a spot on the team after breaking a program record with 274 rushing yards in a win over Whittier. After a 17-10 win over Cal Lutheran on October 6, sophomore cornerback Cade Moffatt was honored for his role in holding the Kingsmen to only 10 points.

CMS stands at 7-2 overall and 6-0 in the SCIAC and will try to complete an undefeated season in league play for the first time in program history when it takes on Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 1 p.m. The 1987 team was officially 4-0-1 in the SCIAC due to a quirk in the conference rules at the time, where splitting two games with the same league opponent resulted in a tie in the standings (the Stags split two games with Occidental that year).
