Brian Wahl Wins SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week for CMS Football

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior offensive lineman Brian Wahl was chosen as the SCIAC Football Offensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Oct. 14, it was announced today by the conference office.

Wahl earned the honor for his role in helping the Stags win at Redlands for the first time since 1987 in a winner-take-all battle for first place on Saturday, defeating the Bulldogs 20-10. Redlands came in allowing only 33.4 rushing yards per game (167 in five games), but Wahl and his offensive linemates helped pave the way for 187 rushing yards, more than the Bulldogs had allowed in the entire season coming into the contest.

When CMS took over the ball early in the fourth quarter leading 12-3, Wahl and the line led a 16-play drive, covering 86 yards and chewing up over 10 minutes off the game clock, with 15 of the 16 plays coming on the ground (the only exception was a four-yard screen pass to running back Christian Curcio). That drive culminated in a 10-yard touchdown run from sophomore Jordan Leonard with 2;19 left to push the lead to 20-3 and seal the win for the Stags.

For the third straight SCIAC game, CMS dominated the time of possession battle, keeping the ball for 37:26, compared to 22:34 for Redlands. In last week's win over Cal Lutheran, CMS held the ball for 36:25 (including the final 9:29 of game clock as they finished off a 17-10 win), while two weeks ago, the Stags had the ball for 39:19, compared to just 20:41 for La Verne in a 37-24 victory.

CMS will try to maintain its hold on first place this weekend, when it travels to Occidental for a 1 p.m. contest.
