Three Student-Athletes Named NSCA All-Americans

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) announced the All-American Athletes of the Year Awards for the 2017-18 school year and of the 500 named from 230 schools across all divisions, three Claremont-Mudd-Scripps athletes earned the honor. The award recognizes athletic accomplishments and dedication to strength and conditioning. Football’s Mackenzie Cooney (CMC), men’s basketball’s Maxwell Kirsch (CMC), and lacrosse’s Corie Hack (CMC) were all honored with the award.

A junior defensive back, Cooney “overcame a broken right ankle in his freshman year and a broken wrist in his sophomore year to accomplish many things in the weight room, on the field, and in the classroom,” coach Chris Vicory said. “Mackenzie is an unquestioned leader on our roster. He organizes and motivates his teammates in our conditioning and lifting sessions.” In the weight room, Cooney benches 285lbs, cleans 305lbs, squats 420lbs, has a vertical a 40”, and runs a 40 in 4.5.

A sophomore forward, Kirsch “is the ideal student-athlete and candidate for this award. In addition to his service around the college and community, he dedicates many hours to the weight room and improving his talents on the court,” CMS strength and conditioning coach Andrew Jones said. “His effort, enthusiasm, and focus are felt by everyone in the weight room. He encourages his teammates to improve and celebrates their accomplishments.

A junior midfielder, Hack’s “dedication to the strength and conditioning program reflects her success on the field,” Jones said. “Corie’s focused, but lighthearted attitude in the weight room creates a positive setting for the team to train.”
