Stags get shut out by Kingsmen in 34-0 loss

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football program suffered its first loss of the season, getting shutout 34-0 by Cal Lutheran (2-3, 2-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Stags' offense struggled to capitalize on several big turnovers made by the defense and special teams unit while Adam Friedrichsen threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns for the Kingsmen. Junior Robby Weissenfels (CMC) stood out on the defensive side, blocking two extra-point conversions and a punt, while senior Jake Glasser (CMC) recorded a sack. The Stags' defense forced two fumbles, which were recovered by sophomore Jackson Zeledon (CMC) and junior Brendan MacDonald (CMC).

The Kingsmen struck early in their opening drive, on second and four from their 43-yard line when Friederichsen found Aaron Lacombe for 57 yards pass for a touchdown.

The Stags struggled to find their rhythm on offense and early in the second quarter, they made a costly mistake to extend Cal Lutheran's lead. At fourth-and-five from their own 30-yard line, the Stags were ready to punt; however, they muffed the snap and fumbled the ball. The Kingsmen capitalized and recovered the ball in the Stags' 1-yard line and stepped into the endzone for the touchdown. After missing the extra point conversion, the Kingsmen had a 13-0 lead.

CMS looked to have caught a break in the middle of the second quarter when Senior Matthew Aven's (CMC) punt was mishandled by Cameron James at their 34-yard line. Zeledon recovered the ball and brought it to Cal Lutheran's 31-yard line. However, the Stags struggled to advance the ball to the end zone and turned the ball over after struggling to convert a fourth-and-two attempt. The Kingsmen closed the half with a 22-yard field goal attempt to take a 16-0 lead.

The Kingsmen continued where they left off, at second-and-10 from the CMS 44-yard line when Friederichsen passed to Lacombe for 44 yards to score the touchdown. Lacombe finished the game with two touchdowns and 142 receiving yards. After the Stags blocked the extra-point attempt, the Kingsmen found the endzone again within minutes when Nick Gordon jumped on a muffed snap and ran it to the CMS endzone to extend the lead 28-0.

Justyn Gutierrez added a touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter when he found Diego Hernandez for 23 yards on first-and-ten at the CMS 23-yard line to run the score 34-0.

The Stags will hit the road next week to take on the University of Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
