Turnovers prove costly for CMS in 31-7 loss at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – Turnovers were the difference in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team's 31-7 loss at Redlands on Oct. 18. CMS committed four turnovers and also gave up a punt return touchdown in the loss, which dropped the team to 2-3 on the season.

From the opening kickoff, things didn't go to well for CMS. Just 10 seconds into the game on the opening kickoff, CMS fumbled the ball inside its own territory which set up Redlands' first touchdown of the night. Eight plays later, Redlands capitalized with a touchdown to go ahead 7-0 on a 1-yard run by Tyrone Sauls Jr. Another CMS fumble led to a Redlands field goal just before the end of the first quarter which pushed their lead to 10-0.

Late in the second quarter, Redlands added a pair of touchdowns to go ahead 24-0 at halftime with one of the touchdowns coming on a 75-yard punt return.

The third quarter saw the teams play even as both offenses were held scoreless. CMS' defense forced two punts by Redlands, one turnover on downs and CMS also came up with an interception in the third quarter. Senior linebacker Max Winsberg had the interception for the CMS defense. Redlands' defense came up with two interceptions in the quarter however, which kept CMS off the scoreboard.

On the second play of the fourth quarter with 14:21 left in the game, Redlands went ahead 31-0 on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Russell to Stephen Rodriguez. CMS' lone touchdown came five minutes later on a blocked punt by senior linebacker Nick Nasse which sophomore Lucas Owan recovered and returned 11 yards for the score.

The CMS defense held Redlands to 132 yards passing and an 18 percent third-down conversion rate in the game. The 132 passing yards allowed is the best defensive performance for CMS all season and marks the third time in five games that CMS has held its opponent under 200 yards passing. Sophomore Griffin Lazarus had a team-high 11 tackles. Junior defensive lineman Andrew Sova had a sack for CMS.

On offense, CMS was held to 254 total yards, including 110 yards rushing. Eight different players had receptions for the CMS offense led by junior Tyler Stanek who had six catches.

CMS is on the road for its next game, Oct. 25 at Occidental at 7 p.m.
