Athenas 7-0, Stags 5-2 At SCIAC Multi-Duals
The women's cross country team finished 7-0 at the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet at La Mirada Park on October 18 while the men's team finished 5-2. Both teams will next compete at the SCIAC Championships on November 1. The meet will take place at Prado Park in Chino and will count for 50% of the SCIAC title with the results from Multi-Dual making up the other 50%.
The Athenas, ranked 22nd in the nation and first in the West Region, were led by the one-two finish [pictured] of Evelyn Ross (SR, Iowa City, IA) and Julia Rigby (FR, Tustin). Ross won with a time of 22:15 with Rigby following closely in 22:20. Rigby beat the next finisher by 47 seconds. The closest dual meet was with Pomona-Pitzer, the region's fifth-ranked team, with CMS winning 24-32. CMS was a perfect 1-5 on four schools and 1-4 on three of the other four. The other three scorers for the Athenas were Ashley Scott (SO, Battle Creek, MI) 6th in 23:23, Katie Harris (SR, Bremerton, WA) 7th in 23:23 and Rachael Martin (SR, Pasadena) 12th in 23:38. Personal best times were turned in by Rigby, Harris and Martin as well as by Lacey McLean (FR, Gig Harbor, WA) in 23:58, Emery Hilles (FR, Eugene, OR) in 24:20, Sara Sholes (FR, Boulder Creek) in 24:37, Kelly Garton (FR, Los Gatos) in 24:43, Breanna Deutsch (FR, Sammamish, WA) in 25:35 and Katie Bennett (FR, South Pasadena) in 29:37.
The Stags had five runners in the top 15 as did the meet winner and runner-up, but were not able to have a runner crack the top five. CMS lost to Occidental 17-38 and to Pomona-Pitzer 20-35, but was a perfect 1-5 on the other five schools. Florian Scheulen (JR, Encinitas) led the team in sixth with a time of 26:52. The other scorers for the Stags were Chris Gurney (SR, Ventura) 11th in 27:20, Bryan Chow (FR, Livermore) 12th in 27:22, Dillon Ayers (SO, Eureka) 14th in 27:31 and Alex Kurtis (JR, Bellingham, WA) 15th in 27:32. Personal bests were turned in by Julian Martinez (FR, Santa Barbara) in 28:50 and by Kevin Potterton (FR, Needham, MA) in 29:49.
