Athenas Defeat Cross Street Rivals
The Athenas continued their strong start to the season with their fourth consecutive win Wednesday night. CMS defeated Pomona-Pitzer 2-1, under the lights on Pritzlaff field after a hard fought 90 minute battle. The Sagehens started out strong, scoring first after a deflection off the crossbar in the 12th minute. However, CMS refused to be rattled and came back to score halfway through the first half. Julia Nishioka (SO, Honolulu, HI) slotted a ball into the left corner off a pass from Nicole Sady-Kennedy (SR, Ladera Ranch) to put the Athenas back in the game. Both teams continued to have scoring opportunities throughout the first half, but neither could capitalize. CMS came into the second half looking to put the Pomona-Pitzer away. Giselle Galanto (SR, Duarte) placed a beautiful ball into the back of the net after an assist from Laura Hagen (JR, Seattle, WA) to put the Athenas up 2-1 in the 48th minute. The Athenas held strong, weathering multiple attacks from Pomona-Pitzer, including a penalty kick in the last five minutes of play. Senior goalkeeper Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (Santa Fe, NM) came up big with a heart-stopping save, keeping her team undefeated in SCIAC play. CMS is now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC.
