Athenas Shutout The Leopards

The Athenas soccer team continued their winning ways this weekend with a 6-0 win over the La Verne Leopards on Saturday. CMS is now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC.  Avenging a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the last seconds of double-overtime last season, the Athenas made it difficult for the Leopards to cross midfield, let alone threaten to score, as they allowed just three shots on goal. Scoring was no problem for the Athenas as they notched three per half and every class, senior to freshman, had at least one member score. Senior Giselle Galanto (Duarte) scored her first goal of the season on a rocket shot to the top corner to get the Athenas off to a fast start in the seventh minute. Sophomore Julia Nishioka (Honolulu, HI) followed quickly with a goal of her own in the ninth minute. The Athenas struck again in the 17th minute, as junior Carolyn Campbell (Irvine) slotted a perfect ball through two defenders to fellow junior Laura Hagen (Seattle, WA), who converted her wide open look just inside the eighteen yard box. The second half scoring happened in a flurry, as sophomore Rachel Bunting (Eugene, OR [pictured]) and freshman Julia Raney (Belvedere) single-handedly combined for three goals in a six minute span, starting in the 76th minute and finishing in the 82nd minute. The Athenas look to continue their impressive start to their season at 7:00 pm on Wednesday at Pritzlaff Field. They will face their archrival Pomona Sagehens (2-4, 1-0).
